Continental gags are a cross between a pelham and a gag. The mouthpiece is free to move up in the horses mouth like a gag (but not as far). They act on the poll with varying degrees of strength, depending upon which ring the reins are placed, the lower the ring the greater the strength. A multi-purpose bit whose action depends on the position of the reins. If you use rein on the top ring, you have nearly the ordinary snaffle action. Since the small ring to which the bridle cheeks are attached is above the top rein, there will be some downward pressure on the poll, which helps to lower the head. With the rein in the lower ring, the poll pressure, and the pressure across the lower jaw (similar to a curb bit) increases. With two reins, one on top and one below, and the action is similar to a pelham.
